Imogen Cunningham

was born on April 12, 1883 in Portland, Oregon. She died June 24, 1976 in San Francisco, California. She began taking pictures in 1901. Her earliest prints imitated contemporary academic painting.

She opened a portrait studio in Seattle, Washington in 1910 and soon established a national reputation as a portrait photographer. Encouraged by Edward Weston, she exhibited her plant photographs in San Francisco, where she would work for the remainder of her career.

In 1932 she joined the West Coast photographers known as Group f.64. Later in her career she taught at the San Francisco Art Institute.(Source)

Imogen Cunningham was a pioneer in photography. Her career in photography started in 1901 and proceeded until the year of her death in 1976. She was one of the first women photographers to capture the nude human form in its unadorned beauty. Her knowledge of the medium evolved from her studies in photographic chemistry.
