WTF: Rick Perry?

WTF: Rick Perry?

I nearly fell off my treadmill when this Rick Perry ad played on the television - Davey Wavey.

In it, the Republican presidential candidate says:
I’m not ashamed to admit I’m a Christian. But you don’t need to be in the pews every Sunday to know that there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

It’s clear that the trajectory of change is in favor of gay and lesbian people. Opinions are changing, old people are dying and the public is becoming increasingly in favor of equality. Of course, this isn’t the first time that progress has occurred in this country.

In 20 or 30 years, I believe that people will look back on the struggle for gay rights in the same way we now view segregation or women’s suffrage. Today, almost everyone understands the importance of civil rights and the right for women to vote. And history doesn’t look favorably on those people that resisted the progress of these movements.

Gay people will gain the right to marry – and we will be fully protected under the law. It will take time, but it will happen. And years after it does, I suspect that Rick Perry will recognize that he fell on the wrong side of history.

P.S. Maybe that time has already come. The video has 20,000 likes on YouTube – but some 660,000 dislikes.
